There is no doubt that throughout the history of chess there have been many superb players who have reshaped and redefined the way the game is played. The criterion used is based upon a number of factors including dominance over contemporaries, length of career at the top, contributions to chess and individual flair and brilliance.

Anatoly Karpov (born 1951) is a Soviet / Russian chess grandmaster and former World Champion. He was the official world champion from 1975 to 1985 when he was defeated by Garry Kasparov. He played three matches against Kasparov for the title from 1986 to 1990, before becoming FIDE World Champion once again after Kasparov broke away from FIDE in 1993. For his decades-long standing among the world's elite, Karpov is considered one of the greatest players of all time.

Emanuel Lasker (1868-1941) was a German chess player, mathematician and philosopher who was world chess champion for 27 years. In his first Lasker was one of the most dominant champions, and is still considered one of the strongest players in history.
His contemporaries said that Lasker used "mind game" and even moved deliberately wrong to confuse opponents. Recent analysis, however, indicate that he was ahead of his time and used a more flexible approach than his contemporaries.
He published five books and chess magazines.

Bobby Fischer (1943-2008) was an American chess player and the eleventh World Champion. It is widely regarded as one of the best chess players of all time. Fischer was also the best-selling chess author.
Considered a "legend of chess." At 13, Fischer became famous for his game "The Game of the Century" against Donald Byrne in NewYork. At age 15 became the youngest GM and candidate for the World Championship so far.

José Raúl Capablanca (1888-1942) was a Cuban chess player who was world chess champion from 1921 to 1927. One of the greatest players of all time, he was renowned for his exceptional endgame skill and speed of play. Due to his achievements in the chess world, mastery over the board and his relatively simple style of play he was nicknamed the "Human Chess Machine".

Playing chess class for decades, being an eminent author of chess, one of the pioneers of computer chess and a chess master in his later years, Botvinnik is widely regarded as the most important contributor to chess in the 20th century .

Alexander Alekhine (1892-1946) was the fourth World Chess Champion. He is often considered one of the greatest chess players ever.
At the age of twenty years, was among the strongest chess players in the world. During the 1920's, won the most tournaments he played. In 1927, he became world chess champion by defeating Capablanca.

Viswanathan Anand (1969 -) is an Indian chess grandmaster, the current world champion and highest ranked player in the world.
Anand is one of six players in history to break the 2800 mark on the FIDE list, and at the age of 37, for the first time became the world number one.
Anand became the first grandmaster from India in 1987.
Anand has been described as the most versatile world champion, as Anand is the only player to have won the world championship of chess in many formats, including knockout, tournament, match, Rapid and Blitz.

He was one of the most dominant players in the history of the game.

Paul Charles Morphy (1837-1884), was an American chess player. He is considered to have been the greatest chess master of his era and an unofficial World Chess Champion. He was a chess prodigy and called "The Pride and Sorrow of Chess".
After teaching himself the game as a child by watching family members play, he was considered one of the best players in New Orleans by age 9.
