Top 10 Scariest Halloween Monsters

They're creepy and they're kooky, mysterious and spooky. But Halloween's creepiest creature customs didn't appear out of thin air, not even the ghosts. Many of them once instilled real fear in medieval towns, when folklore reigned supreme and getting freaked out came easy. Here we offer up some real science and history of the scary stars of Halloween.

#1 - Werewolf

Werewolf

Werewolves are humans suffering from a curse that causes them to transform into a lupine creatures, particularly during full moon nights. Werewolves generally feel and act like normal humans until the moon is full, and then their bodies and their minds change into some combination of human and wolf. They may or may not have memories of their ugly deeds when they return to human form.

#4 - Witches

Witches

Old legends tell us that witches gather twice a year when seasons change - on April 30 (the eve of May Day), and the second time on the eve of October 31 - All Hallow's Eve. Both times witches arrive to their parties by broom. Folklore tales say that witches then transform into black cats (and into other forms) on Halloween night to approach unsuspecting people and cast spells on them. It is said that to see a witch you have to wear your clothes inside out and walk backwards on Halloween night - then at midnight you will see a witch.

#5 - Boogey Man

Boogey Man

The Boogey Man is an imaginary monster often believed in by children. Adults have traditionally used the boogeyman to threaten children into going to sleep on time, although this practice seems counter-intuitive. The boogeyman may also be used as a threat to induce children to finish their meal or to behave in general. Versions of the boogeyman exist almost universally, and some psychologists believe that the monster may stem from an evolutionary need in prehistoric times to discourage children from wandering away from the safety of the group.

#6 - Ghosts

Ghost

Ever since humans began talking about a separate spirit that inhabits the body and exits after death, they have pondered what happened to those spirits. And so, ghosts were born. In general, they were thought of as spirits that didn't end up going where they were supposed to go, for one reason or another. Humans have been, at some points, able to help these creatures "cross over" and find final resting places. In other cases, the ghosts have done the same for the humans!

#7 - Chucky

#8 - Scarecrow

Scarecrow

Sometimes you see them in summer fields, and sometimes you have to wait until nearly Halloween, when you'll see them in the Pumpkin Patch. They're a fun symbol of the Harvest season, and kids love them. You can incorporate scarecrows into your studies of the farm, harvest, autumn, falling leaves, Halloween, pumpkins, and/or Thanksgiving ... or do what I do, and give them a unit all their own.

#9 - Vampire

Vampire

Stories of vampires have been around for a long time, winging their way into the folklore of all sorts of different cultures. They haven't always sucked blood; sometimes they've consumed human breath or "essence." A vampire most often comes into existence when another vampire bites a human. Although they've changed over the centuries, in general they fear the day and are immortal unless killed. To protect yourself, a cross, a silver bullet, a wooden stake or holy water will (usually) help.

#10 - Demons

Demon

People for centuries have been calling things that they do not understand, “demons.” Many today still erroneously believe demons hide behind rocks and are out to get them…that demons are fallen angels of Lucifer, whom they consider to be the “Prince of Demons,” or “Satan.”
